The equipment valued at Sh1.5 million was part of the firm's initiative dubbed She Will Connect program targeted at supporting ICT clubs in these schools. The event held Saturday at an ICT fair held at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development earmarked schools in Machakos, Nairobi, Kiambu and Kajiado as beneficiaries of the project.

The She Will Connect programme is aimed at reducing the internet gender gap around the world. Speaking at the event, Mark Matunga Intel's Head of Corporate Affairs in East Africa said this will be achieved through an innovative combination of digital literacy training, an online peer network, and gender-relevant content.

"There are relatively few girls pursuing studies in Science, Technology and Maths (STEM), subjects needed to gain the skills for careers in technology and engineering. The program emphasizes problem-solving in real world issues because educating girls has an important multiplier effect; expanding opportunities for families, communities and nation." Matunga said.

Matunga added that at present there are 25 percent fewer women than men online globally. He noted that the gap is wider in Sub-Saharan Africa standing at 43 percent. "The ICT clubs in girls' schools and the computer donation underscores Intel's commitment in advancing ICT skills for girls locally," Matunga concluded.
