The 2019 Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival will showcase 12 ocean-conscious events and 16 films at nine venues in Cape Town and False from 9 November to 9 December.
International lifestyle brand Vans headlines the festival this year, enabling an extra week to extend the fun with extra emphasis on conservation, ocean activism and community upliftment.
Climate change awareness
“In keeping with an increasingly important mandate to conserve our oceans and our planet, we will again be working with partners to grow awareness to consolidate events around beach clean-ups, ocean films spearheaded by Slide Night, which returns to the prestigious Centre for the Book with 10-minute talks by ocean thought leaders on topics that include science, sustainability, adventure and activism. Of all 15 festivals we’ve produced, 2019 is going to be our most significant in terms of climate change awareness, and there is so much the public can get involved in,” says Steve Pike, festival founder.

All proceeds from the event are donated to beneficiaries such as the NSRI, Shark Spotters, the 9 Miles Project, Ocean Pledge, Beach Co-op and South African Adaptive Surfing. Last year’s art auction raised R782,000. The highest-priced board – by Andrew Sutherland – went for R105,000, closely followed by Kirsten Beet’s board for R102,000.
