Specialty espresso - storm in a teacup

The South African-borne red espresso, a premium ground rooibos tea produced under patent for use in a coffee espresso machine, is taking the beverage market by storm. It was recently awarded ‘Best New Product' in the specialty beverage category at the Specialty Coffee Association of America's 20th Annual Conference & Exhibition, held in Minneapolis.

red espresso® is the first tea to play by coffee's rules. It is 100% premium Rooibos tea uniquely cut to perform like espresso ground coffee. In short, it delivers an intense rooibos shot with espresso's characteristic ‘crema'. The shot is the basis for a range of coffee-style, Rooibos-based drinks, including the popular red cappuccino, red latte, red hot white (with white hot chocolate), and fresh red (a freshly expressed natural iced tea).

It is caffeine-free and is said to contain five times more antioxidants than green tea and ten times more antioxidants than traditional Rooibos tea. It is easy to make at home using espresso and coffee machines, plungers or percolators.

The award was a proud moment for Carl Pretorius, the founder of red espresso: "As a South African company, bringing this award home feels like winning the World Cup! The coffee industry is huge and incredibly competitive. For us to get their endorsement is a major feat."

Distributed by Stafford Bros & Draeger, the product is available in 250g packs from @home stores nationwide, Spar, and selected Pick n Pay Family, Super and Hypermarkets.
