2018 ASAQS Conference theme puts emphasis on growth, progress

The Association of South African Quantity Surveyors' (ASAQS) fourth annual conference is this year themed 'Traction', conveying the industry body's determination for the profession to not only hold its ground but to gain ground as an authority in the built environment. The event takes place 2 August at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

“This year’s theme emphasises growth, actioned by progress that is both forward and upward moving. This is a route that the quantity surveying profession in South Africa is being encouraged to take. It taps into how we are making progress as a profession and how we can capitalise on new opportunities in the local built environment,” says Karl Trusler, EduTech director of the ASAQS.

BIM Living Spaces 5D BIM Estimating Competition

This year’s conference also marks the first time that the BIM Living Spaces 5D BIM Estimating Competition will be held at the event. From leveraging historical data and working with models, to keeping costs in sync with design iterations, the Living Spaces 5D BIM Estimating Competition 2018 will reveal how to adopt the latest tools and classifications in an estimating environment.

“The Living Spaces 5D BIM Estimating Competition offers estimators the opportunity to show off their skills and value with the latest take-off, estimation tools on the market,” says Vaughan Harris of the BIM Institute.

“Besides the great prizes that can be won, participants can use this opportunity to explore the latest electronic take-off software tools available in a non-threatening but structured, outcomes-based environment. The BIM Institute has developed this competition to encourage the learning, testing and exploring of these digital tools and processes to help estimators uncover new applications while understanding the importance of classifying elements in a 3D model.”

The runner up will receive a one-year, free WinQS licence worth R 12,650 courtesy of ACE Computing Solutions, plus a free BIM online course worth R1,950 courtesy of the BIM Institute.

“The importance of a competition like this helps estimators understand coding and classifications on BIM projects. From the competition entrees, we are hoping to see a new era of estimator’s unfold in our industry, while also showing that quantities can be measured and produced in a manner which can assist all parties in the cost control and operations of future building projects,” adds Harris.

The competition will be launched on 9 July, when registrations will open and the competition criteria will be made available here. Entry to the competition is free of charge and the competition deadline for submissions is 23 July. Winners of the competition will be announced at the ASAQS conference where the presentations of the finalists will also be displayed at the event.
