“The MEXT programme offers scholarships to students who wish to study at Japanese universities. Interested parties must submit their applications no later than the deadline of the 31st of May 2019 to the Embassy of Japan,” says Embassy spokesperson, Taro Sawada.

The MEXT scholarship is open to students wishing to complete a masters or PhD degree; engage in teacher training programmes or study towards an undergraduate degree, as well as learners wishing to acquire knowledge on Japanese studies. The MEXT programme covers a wide field of disciplines including science, technology, law, literature, and architecture.

“MEXT not only offers students (both undergraduates and postgraduates) the opportunity to study in Japan, it also helps to form academic links between universities in Japan and South Africa,” says Sawada.

The MEXT scholarship programme has been available to South Africans wishing to study in Japan since 1994.

To date, 90 South Africans have been afforded the opportunity to attain undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in Japan.

“Participants who have completed their studies in Japan through MEXT are currently playing key roles in a variety of sectors in South Africa. Some examples include diplomats, a researcher studying Japanese pop-culture and a film director. The experience of studying in Japan gives students a unique perspective, which enables them to be more creative in their fields after returning to South Africa. The 2020 MEXT applications are now available so we would like to see as many South African youths apply for it,” concludes Sawada.
