Local mohair industry displays international dominance

The Eastern Cape region of southern Africa produces over 54% of the world's mohair making it the hub of the international natural fibre industry. The International Mohair Summit held from 3-6 November in Graaf-Reinet and Jansenville offered visitors valuable insight regarding the production, processing techniques and innovations within the industry. Oasys Innovations provided marquees and electrical infrastructure at the event.

Endorsed by the Premier of the Eastern Cape Province, Noxolo Kiewiet, the Mayor of the Ikhwezi Municipality, Sizwe Mngwevu, and the Chairman of Mohair South Africa, Reinhold du Randt, the summit created a forum for role-players in the global natural fibre industry to develop partnerships with contemporaries, buyers and manufacturers across all five continents. Participants also addressed critical issues facing the sector and worked on developing viable solutions for the future global success and growth of the industry.

Says Wellington Jansen, project manager at Inkanyezi Events: “Participants were able to showcase the processes, products and animals involved in the production of natural fibre. Events like this facilitate the interaction between growers, buyers, processors and retailers, further enhancing local and international trade agreements which boost the economy and stimulate growth within the international natural fibre market.”

The three-day summit included a trade show, for industry players to demonstrate products and services in a dynamic and personal way, a two-day conference which featured international fibre experts who provided cutting-edge commentary and analysis on issues facing the industry, information on trends, including incentives for future strategies, a site visit to local farms as well as a gala dinner and fashion show which allowed top mohair and wool fashion designers to showcase their talent and expertise.

Says Carl Woodland, chief operating officer of Oasys Exhibitions: “Exhibitions are powerful tools for bringing customers and suppliers together. Face-to-face interaction is incredibly beneficial when developing and growing sustaining partnerships. Suppliers can demonstrate their products, answer questions and gain a better understanding of the specific needs of their clientele. We are proud to support exhibitions that provide a platform for improved trade locally and internationally.”
