Global Diabetes Run/Walk draws thousands of participants

Diabetes affects many South Africans and individuals across the globe, yet a large number of diabetes cases remain undiagnosed, mainly because of a lack of education and information.
Global Diabetes Run/Walk draws thousands of participants

Diabetes South Africa (DSA) is a non-profit organisation, established in 1969, to promote public awareness of diabetes, to inform those affected about the resources available to them, and to serve as a support mechanism for people living with the illness. The organisation has a national office located in Johannesburg and eight branches across the country, plus more than 100 support groups and smaller branches located countrywide.

The Western Cape Branch of DSA recently held a fundraising event - the Global Diabetes Run/Walk - and Oasys Innovations Cape Town partnered with the DSA as part of the company's corporate social investment initiative. Well over 2 000 people took part in the day, all in the name of creating diabetes awareness. Says Margo McCumisky, Branch Manager for DSA Western Cape: "It was one of our most successful diabetes awareness and fundraising events to date. This year we also had tremendous support from the media, and the run/walk was even featured on SABC news."

Oasys sponsored basic infrastructure for the event. Graham Jeffery, Chief Operating Officer for Oasys Cape Town, comments: "We have been involved with the DSA Run/Walk event before and, as always, it was pleasing to receive feedback that the day was a success. Most people know someone who has been affected by diabetes in some way; therefore we are always eager to lend a hand to the DSA for their annual Global Diabetes Run/Walk.

"The funds we raised will be allocated to various projects, which include strengthening and building our support groups around the country, as well as our shopping mall and school projects, in an effort to make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of people. We look forward to working with our sponsors, including Oasys Innovations, again next year."
