Leading private education institution Damelin hosted parents' events recently throughout its 17 campuses nationally in a bid to secure an open line of communication between the campuses and their students' parents.
Held at different sites across the country from April through to June 2017, the campuses each got the opportunity to meet with parents and discuss their students' academic progress. The campuses delivered interesting and informative keynote addresses from the General Managers, Academic Managers, as well as lecturers. Parents were also armed with a comprehensive student profile, which defined details of their child’s educational performance.
Damelin Brand Manager Tracy Govender said that communication touchpoints such as these are essential for Damelin to ensure that their students get the individual attention they require. “One of the key links to a student’s success is their support structure, which is our focal point and having our parents understand our vision is extremely important. We also provide our students with tailored attention and guidance through our Academic Advising Centre, which is one of our unique differentiators. Our advising centre, which is a first for the country, provides students with one-on-one attention from skilled faculty heads and subject matter advisors.”
Parents were also able to meet and converse one-on-one with their child’s lecturers, discussing in detail their child’s progress. Lecturers outlined important focus areas and provided parents with a holistic view of what their child’s relevant subject demands.
Student Representative Council members from the campuses also attended and provided parents with a complete idea of the council’s contribution to campus life and activities.
Here is what some of Damelin’s General Managers had to say:
“Our event was truly a success. It was so refreshing to meet our students’ parents and be able to share ideas and the vision for their child’s future,” said Gopaulkrishna Reddy, General Manager at Damelin Benoni.
Damelin Cape Town City, Chad Smith said, “We had parents flying in from the DRC to attend; this just highlighted the importance of such an event.”
“It was such a good experience to see the interest parents and sponsors have in student’s progress. The feedback received was so positive and the lecturers were commended on the great job they are doing ensuring that we deliver quality education,” said Liza Rootman, General Manager at Damelin Menlyn.
The event was well received and welcomed by parents. We caught up with one parent Samantha Theys, who had to say, “As a parent, it is so important to be clued up with your child’s educational success and this meeting has helped me achieve this. The student profile was a truly informative way for me to learn about my child and now I can find methods to support and assist him going forward. Well done to Damelin.”
Tracy added, “We have received an overwhelming amount of positive responses from the parents, advising that the event was a great platform to educate themselves on their child’s future. We look forward to hosting much more parent-student-centric activities in the future.”
