Staff and students of Damelin, CityVarsity and Central Technical College formed various teams and competed head-to-head in netball, volleyball and soccer all in the hope of bagging the winning trophies.

The teams who ruled victorious includes Damelin Vaal for soccer, Damelin Centurion for volleyball and Damelin Pretoria for netball. Every year Educor, leading private education provider hosts these sporting events for its staff and students at its campuses across the country, with the aim of promoting health and fitness.

Sales manager for Damelin Vaal Sylvia Pooe said that this was the second year in a row that the campus has taken the trophy for soccer. “Both our staff and students are extremely happy to have won. We were confident that we were going to win and bring the trophy back home. We had the greatest support from our students as they danced and sang whilst their fellow peers battled it out for the win.”

Kerry Staples, General Manager for Damelin Centurion, also excitingly mentioned that the Centurion campus won netball last year. “It was a really successful event. Every year our students look forward to this day where they can show off their sporting talents among their fellow students. I was so proud to see how passionate they were. Their wonderful team spirit shined through and ultimately contributed to our overall win.”

The Educor Sporting Event is a national initiative that takes place in the major provinces nationally including Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. This is a day where students at the various Educor brands get the opportunity to meet and mingle with one another.

Jessie Naidoo, Group Head of Communications, said events like these reinforce Chairman Leo Chetty’s aim to highlight to our students the critical importance of leisure activities as part of their student life. “We believe that it is extremely important for our students to have a proper work-life balance. Through the Educor Sports Day, we aim to motivate our students to participate in health and fitness activities. The Sports Day in particular afforded our students with the chance to come together and enjoy an opportunity to have fun outside the daily stresses of their academic calendar.”

Yolandi Breytenbach, General Manager of Damelin Pretoria, said that her students were so happy to take the netball trophy back to their campus. “We celebrated for two days on our win and did not lose any matches on the Sports Day. Just before my netball team played the final game, I called them together and promised them, should they win, I will arrange with other colleges to play netball against their teams. I am now in the process of making arrangements to host a netball tournament with external colleges.”

The Educor Sports Day was well received at the campuses and staff and students are eagerly awaiting and continue training for next year. The KwaZulu-Natal leg is up next. Watch this space for highlights.
