Applications open for SSP Scholarships

Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP) is inviting Grade 6 learners who achieve marks of 70% and above in Maths, Science and English and come from low-income homes to apply for a five-year SSP scholarship to attend one of its 25 partner schools in South Africa.

Since 2000, non-profit trust, SSP has given 1500 bursaries to deserving scholars to attend top independent and public high schools in the country.

The scholarships given to date are valued at R150m, to attend schools in Johannesburg, Pretoria, the KZN Midlands, Hillcrest, Grahamstown, East London and Somerset West.

The applicants must be in Grade 6, no older than 12, keen on sport and helping the community, and have leadership potential. The combined household income must not exceed R20,000 per month, to qualify to apply for the scholarship programme.

The 10-month recruitment process includes an entrance exam, interviews with the parents and guardians and includes tests to assess intellectual quotient (IQ) and emotional intelligence (EQ) to conclude with a camp to see how they get on with other youngsters in a team.

SSP aims to nurture future leaders with this five-year scholarship programme which includes tuition, school uniform, sports gear, books and local excursions. The support given is not only academic and psycho-social, it also covers mentorship and parental support. Orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) are offered additional assistance.

In 2017, SSP scholar Melody Dube matriculated from St Mary’s School for Girls with eight distinctions, thanks to her hard work and her SSP scholarship. Thebe Tsatsimpe (SSP Class of 2004 from Redhill School) is a top alumnus and now studying at Harvard University in the US. If you know of deserving students, please urge them to apply.
