ICASA's ultimatum for Jozi FM

The Council of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) last week gave the management and board of directors of the Soweto-based community radio station Jozi-FM a list of special conditions that the station must comply with in order to assist with the resolution of the crisis it faces.

Among those conditions is that Jozi FM must convene an AGM on Saturday, 6 October 2007, at a venue and time accessible and conducive to community based-organisations and individual members. Further, Jozi FM is required to make arrangements with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to facilitate the election of the community forum structure and board for the station.

ICASA and the National Community Radio Forum will attend the meeting as observers.

ICASA will work closely with the board and management of Jozi FM with a view to assisting the station in meeting all licence conditions required. ICASA appeals to all stakeholders within the community of Soweto to support the process and to allow the board and management of the station, as custodians of the licence, to pave a way to normality for the station.

Anyone who may have questions and other concerns regarding Jozi FM should contact ICASA's broadcasting monitoring unit.

Press conference

Meanwhile, the FXI Media Rights Campaigns Committee in Soweto, together with the appointed Task Team concerning Jozi FM problems, is inviting all members of the press to a press conference today, Tuesday, 25 September 2007, at 11am.

The press conference will take place at Khaya Centre in Dube at Mahalefele Mncube Drive in Soweto, next to Jozi FM studios.

According to a press statement from the FXI, “The objective of the press conference is to share with the members of the press the developments regarding Jozi FM and the manner in which ICASA as the Authority is dealing with matter hence there is no improvement and it is not clear whether the AGM will take place or not.”
