Although recently retired, I remain actively engaged in writing.
I spent more than 40 years in journalism and communications, writing for and editing both television and radio news, as well as writing for newspapers and trade magazines. I have also produced on-line magazines, and handled daily news coverage for the website.
I retired at the end of last year as Managing Editor of the well known monthly mining magazine "Mining Review Africa".

EXPERIENCE: (WORKING FROM THE PRESENT BACKWARDS)
1. February 1995 to the present:
I have run my own company, Africa-to-Africa Communications (Pty) Limited -
a small media consultancy specialising in African business communications
and media relations.
These are some of the projects in which I have been, and in some cases
still am, involved :
• Conducting interviews, handling detailed research and compiling comprehensive overviews of the various South African industrial sectors for the "Africa Sector" electronic service of "Who Owns Whom".
• Performing all the required editorial functions as South African representative of the leading German newspaper "Allgemeine Zeitung".
• Handling interviews and research and producing regular articles for the magazine "S. A. Property Mart".
• On contract, personally writing four to six articles (of 1,200 to 1,500 words) per month for "Mining
• Researching, writing and distributing articles for the business press and the mining media on behalf of African Explosives Limited - Africa's leading explosives producer.
• Appointed managing editor of "Mining Review Africa" and continued until the end of November 2013, when I retired.
2. September 1974 to January 1995 - SABC
Radio News till January 1978, rising to the level of National News Editor;
appointed National News Editor, Television News in February 1978, and
then became News Commentator, Specialist African News Reporter and
Senior News Editor, Television News.
In March 1981 I won the Artes Award for the best TV Reporting for my
ongoing coverage in 1980/81of the entire Zimbabwean independence
process, culminating in the national election in February 1981, and actual
independence in April of that year.
I was appointed Head of External News from July 1981, and promoted to
Executive Editor, External Services from December 1989.
During this period, at the annual Bokmakierie Awards (the External Services
equivalent of the Artes Awards), I was awarded the External Services
Management Award for heading and co-ordinating the entire planning and
implementation of the transformation of the old "Radio RSA" into the SABC
External Services' new "Channel Africa"
.
3. April 1970 - August 1974 - South African Financial Gazette
I was appointed as Industrial Reporter, rising in less than two years to the
level of Industrial Editor.
4. October 1966 to March 1970 -
Joined my father's company - Adriano Maia Limited - as Public
Relations Officer. The company was headquartered in (then)
Lourenco Marques with offices in Luanda and Lisbon, but I worked
out of Johannesburg.
5. May 1960 to September 1966 - SABC
Appointed as a cub reporter on Radio News in Johannesburg, rising to
National News Editor back in Johannesburg.
