Show profile Hide profileI am skilled in all facets of newspaper production having held a number of production roles within the newspaper industry over a career that spans almost 25 years.
I currently hold the title of National Production Editor at Independent Media (IM) and have been the head of editorial production since November 2016. I oversee the print production of 14 print titles (6 daily newspapers, 1 weekly and 7 weekend titles). I manage a team of 70 production sub-editors (and a pool of freelancers) across a seven-day period, on a national basis, covering four regional divisions. I am based in Pretoria.
I started my newspaper career at the Pretoria News photographic department in April 1994. I moved to the picture desk (scanning, colour correction, graphics) in February of 1995 and the sub-editors department in October 2002.
I was a chief sub-editor for Independent Production (based at the Pretoria News) from March 2009 until October 2014. I joined the production team in 2002 and quickly climbed through the ranks, holding titles of assistant deputy and deputy chief sub-editor.
Following a three-month secondment to a group project I was identified for the position of Group Digital Production Editor from November 2014 until October 2016. In this role I was responsible for the IOL app development - from an editorial perspective. Because of my technical skills in Prestige (IM CMS) my main function in this position was the testing and implementation of new editorial systems across the group. I was the editorial team leader on this project and as part of a small team, successfully oversaw the training of editorial and commercial editorial staff, migration of print templates and publication artwork and the rolling out of three new editorial systems at all Independent Media titles.
My specialties include in-depth knowledge of InDesign, Baobab (web publishing), OneView (web-based CMS) and InCopy, creative page design and layout (including template design and editing) and copy editing. I am able to lead, manage and delegate. I am even-tempered and get along with others.
I have worked on many IM group projects over the years, the most recent being a national digital first print best redesign project of 13 IM publications. I played an important role in the technical aspects (templates and page designs) and the implementation and execution phase of this project.
I have an excellent sense of news. I am deadline-driven and work well under pressure. I work smartly and possess good visual skills, having designed many visually-striking layout for Independent Media over the years. I am skilled in all facets of newspaper production. I am able to copytaste, sub, revise, design, proof and edit. I am proficient in InDesign, InCopy, OneView, Baobab, Microsoft Excel & Google Docs.
