Pick n Pay introduces Appreciation Voucher for cashless tipping

South African retailer Pick n Pay has introduced a new cashless way for customers to say “thank you”. The Appreciation Voucher is available in R5, R10, and R20 denominations and allows customers to tip people who provide everyday services, such as shopping centre car guards.

Although cashless payments are convenient for consumers, they can create challenges when people want to tip but no longer carry cash, and the recipient cannot accept digital payments, such as QR code payments.

A voucher of appreciation

Customers can buy the vouchers at till points at Pick n Pay stores nationwide and give them to anyone as a token of appreciation.

Recipients can redeem the vouchers for groceries at any Pick n Pay store, and customers can buy multiple vouchers in a single transaction.

The vouchers are valid for three years and can be redeemed nationwide for groceries.

Recipients can redeem each voucher in full in a single transaction, with the shopping basket value equal to or greater than the voucher amount.

No change is given, and vouchers cannot be exchanged for cash. Lost vouchers cannot be reprinted, so customers should keep them safe.

Simple solution

The national rollout was inspired by an initiative at Pick n Pay Steenberg Village in Cape Town, where the franchised store introduced R5 food stamps customers could buy and give to car guards.

The idea provided a simple solution to a familiar dilemma: customers wanted to show appreciation but often had no cash.

Car guards at the centre could collect the stamps and redeem them for groceries when needed.

After its success and positive feedback, Pick n Pay expanded the Appreciation Voucher initiative nationwide so more customers and recipients could benefit.
