KENIC launches automated .ke registry system

The .ke domain names have been launched by the Kenya Network Information Centre (KENIC) with a new registry for their registration and management. Also included are three lower-priced second level Internet domains and a new registry system.

The three domains .me.ke, .mobi.ke, and .info.ke are designed for use of personal names, mobile content and information exchange. According to The Standard the domains are supposed to help Kenya market itself globally.

"Since the Internet is about information, and info.ke address communicates information to people who are looking for it. .me.ke is about you," said Sammy Burucharu Kenic's chairman. "With these new domains, individuals will now own a country's domain identity like www.otieno.ke instead of the dominant yahoo.com or a gmail.com.," Burucharu says.

According to the Kenic official website, the features of the new domains will include: prepaid billing,
open and easy to extend, shared multi-system, multi-user system, flexible domain management, interaction at web service level, automated invoice posting and domain clearance, allows for integration to payment system, built-in reporting module and custom data mining engine. It also allows clients to build third party portals and use of password tokens; for secure authentication.

Travelers planning to visit the country will also be able to extract specific information by keying in dot.info.ke.

"The new local domains would enhance more search engine uptake of our content which is the next phase after the landing of the fibre optic cable," he said.

Previously the dormant .co.ke and or.ke were the only available domains for people interested in registering .ke domains.
