According to a report on BizTech Africa, a portable kit, consisting of a mobile app and clip-on hardware, which transforms a smartphone into an eye examination tool, is currently being piloted in Kenya.

The report states that the portable eye examination kit, Peek, created by scientists at the University of St Andrews, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, could be a "potential tool to revolutionise the prevention of blindness in low-income countries." Peek can be used by any non-expert with minimal training to gather detailed clinical information on a low-cost Android smartphone with a simple clip-on attachment.
